What was good about the JJ Cobas?

Nothing ha ha ha. No ...do you remember the suspension?

Yes.

Tony draws a picture of the bike on paper and says “This is the rear wheel. This is the centre of the front sprocket pinion. Here is the sprocket with the chain. Normally in normal motorcycles the chain goes to the rear wheel from the engine. On the JJ Cobas no. The chain from the engine goes to sprocket on the pivot of the arm. Then chain goes top rear wheel. When you make gas this suspension goes hard and this is good for riding. When you make the steps you give the gas and lift up, the suspension goes hard and you go up clean. With JJ Cobas no. When you make gas nothing. There is nothing. The suspension no go hard. It had very soft suspension. In the mud, in the wet this suspension is better because the suspension is always working but this is only 1 section in England, no here. So you get one clean with this suspension but the rest of the trial no work correct.

Did you say to Antonio about this problem?

Yes but it was too late to sort this out. In the beginning we all think this is good. I think this is good, yes, but after we see with Gabino that this is wrong and no good for cleaning the sections and no good for the project.

Who gave the money for the JJ Cobas?

Sponsors

But who for the moto?

Sponsors. Oil, helmet, tobacco...

For the development of the moto just the sponsors?

Yes.

No big boss or big investor?

No. Sponsors and JJ Cobas company, Jacinto . JJ Cobas company was a racing team and maker of bikes for the racing. They do many things with moto

Did you prefer the JJ Cobas with the Bultaco engine or the Montesa engine?
Retrotrials visited this collector recently . This lucky guy had both models of JJ Cobas.

Bultaco. The first was Montesa. After we change to Bultaco, because the engine of Bultaco was better. I stay with JJ Cobas riding the trial for half of the year. I no compete a full  year because it was impossible to ride this bike.

In the year before you won the championship of Spain?

Yes

So, you go to JJ Cobas and you maybe only ride 6 trial and then finish. For you as Spanish
champion this must have been very disappointing and very bad to hand over the
championship because you were the boss of trial in Spain?

Yes! I want to finish the year but at this time I was really finished with trial.

But you wanted to win this year badly and the next year?

No, no because firstly I no take money because I was only 23 or 24 years. I was 23 or 24 and at this time I knew that my father needed me to help him in the family business. It was here that I had my future so it was time for me to stop riding as a work

Did you ever get your bonuses for winning?

Sometimes, but many times no. At this time I left trial and returned to my village and the business of my father. I run a business here with men harvesting the cork from the trees. We have many contracts doing this from the landowners.

Did you take money and get paid by JJ Cobas?

This is correct. I only take money for the travel, no for me to keep the money.

Did you take money at all through your whole career with Ossa, Bultaco, Montesa and JJ Cobas?

No, no money, just expenses for travel and things to spend for the trial.

So you no take money like the riders later like Tarres and Colomer?

No no no. Then after JJ at the age of 24 years I decide I must be with my father to work or to make other things. At this time all of the factories close. When I arrive first with Bultaco, Bultaco close. They no pay me money. After I ride with Ossa. Then Ossa close and they no pay me money ha ha. After then I ride with Montesa but they sell to Honda and go to Honda and no pay me money. Many people this happen to. The contracts were to pay me expenses and a little more but like Bultaco and the others, they close and they no pay me any.
