Once all of the clutch, drive shaft, crank and kick start components were removed, this is what was left. Luckily I didn't find any surprises in there and it all seemed in good condition.

Now the splitting of the cases. The blue Hymolar gasket sealer tells me someone has been in there before me.

Once apart I can see the gearbox is perfect whilst the crank is a mess.

In fact it was the mains bearings that were seized. The crank bearing has no signs of play or pitting.

The upper piston ring was snapped.
