Page 13- Interview with Francesc Tarres + meet Pol and Jordi's father at home.

Getting access to ride a motorcycle is never easy. Being an international star, did Jordi have access to ride where ever he wanted?

Back in the 80’s and 90’s where did you practise. Were you allowed to just ride anywhere you wanted, as Jordi was such a national hero. At this time it was permitted. It is not like now. In 1995 the law was changed permitting riding in only a few places. Father had a friend who owned a lot of land around here. When you have permission to ride on some land it is good to ride like this.

There are many pictures of Jordi riding on the road in Rellinars. Did the Police ever stop you and give you tickets ?

Yes, this has happened a few times. Again about 2 years ago they went after Jordi when they were trying his new bike.

Looking back, in your opinion were the Beta or the GasGas days better ?

Beta. Because this was Jordi’s first time of winning and the first title. When they were with Beta the team was quiet and assured. Jordi had to just work hard and produce results. Jordi changed to GasGas as he thought the trial motorcycle of GasGas could be better. The good times were when Jordi in 1989 had the new Beta prototype and he started to win everything. He win 14 World trial in a row. Then the motorcycle went on for public sale. Then they started later to have problems winning on the Beta Techno. Later on with Beta Jordi asked Beta to get the prototype ready for him to ride in trials before it was tested and released to the public. Beta did not give him the bike because they were losing confidence in him to win at trials. They thought that he could not win anymore. They thought that if they gave him the new bike, he wouldn’t win on it and spoil the unveiling of the new bike and the future of this bike. They thought that if Jordi no win people would think the bike is not good.

Many riders were changing from one marque to another and at this time because of all of this, Jordi took the opportunity and went to GasGas in 1993. In 1993 he won with an already existing motorcycle. The next year Jordi won again with a much changed motorcycle. Every year Gasgas were bringing out a new model and there was great progress. This was because Jordi was feeding so much information to the factory to constantly improve the motorcycle. The progress on the motorcycles in GasGas all happened between 1993 – 1997. There hasn’t been much progress since then. There have been great improvements at this time with the evolution of the trial motorcycles.

Did Jordi make changes to his motorcycle all of the time ?

Yes, Jordi is changing and working on the motorcycle all of the time. He loved trial and he was always finding ways to improve the motorcycle all of the time. He was very much aware of his knowledge that he had and tried hard to revolutionise the trials motorcycle.
