page 2    2013 Marc Colomer Exclusive interview

Like all Retrotrials interviews this is word for word perfect. Its all here. Its not my interpretation of what Marc said, it is what Marc said.
So .... picture yourself at a hot Spanish smart garage, It's 32 degrees. You are sitting on an aluminium metal chair with an expresso in your hand. There is a small table in front of you. Behind you there is a large hyper store and a huge busy car park. The noise of the dual carriageway drones in the back ground. The fuel pumps are whirring and cars pull in and out. The forecourt air compressor cuts itself on and off.  Most importantly Marc Colomer is sitting in front of you :)

Where were you born?

I was born in Olot, near here in Spain.

Do you have brothers and sisters?

One brother who is four years younger than me.

Have you always lived in Olot?

Yes, not I live in a different place but nearby to Olot.

After you went to school did you go to college as well?

Yes, until 17, I went to the school just before University. After school I finished education because it was impossible to make and do two things. Now in Spain it is more easy to make school and sport but at this time it was impossible to make this. Because when I was 17 I was in the team at this time and I was in a full time contract with Beta in a professional contract and this made it impossible to do anything else.

Did you study specific subjects at college?

No, at this time I just study everything but at this time my goal was to study something about economics.

What do your parents do for a living?

My father at this moment was …he had one company for example like UPS to send parcel, delivery.

Did you ride in Trialsin before you ride motorcycle?

I start at very young, 5 years old, until 12 or 13 and after I start with the bike. I start with the bike at 13 or 14, 14……..not before at all.

What was your first trialsin bike that you had?

It was a Angles. It is named after a small town, just 30 kilometres from Olot. I ride this in the Catalonian Championship. I do not remember the year but I was 14 years old.

Was this the main success you had, in the Catalonian Trialsin Championship?

No no, World Championship. In this time in the trialsin there was many class and at this time I win two times the World Championship in the Benjamin class and the other one is Halabin. I win two times the World Championship. It was 4 or 5 races in July and August. It was very different from now.

Did you travel around the World doing trialsin?

No, it was in Europe only. At this time it was only in Europe.

Did your parents go with you?

Yes yes yes from the first time until ……my family was with me always. When I start the bike, after only with my father as my mother stay home with my brother. My brother make football, not professional but my mother stay with my brother and my father go with me.

Marc Colomer can be seen central in both photos. He rode for Team Derbi who were a major Spanish Trialcin and motorcycle force.
In both photos can be seen the successful trials rider Jon Pons. He is the tallest of the three.

Who was your main rival in trialsin?

Fredrique Crosset, you know him? For 3 or 4 years this was my competitor.

What years did you win the World Championship in trialsin? Can you remember?

This is need to search ha ha. No, I can’t remember exactly. I think it was 83 ,84

What was your first motorcycle?

Before I have 1 Cota 25cc, I ride only for hobby 1 time per month, because at this time I ride with the bicycle. This was my first play bike. When I stop with the bicycle and start with the bike, my first bike was a Cota 125cc, a red one, Montesa. I was not professional at this time because I was only 14.This bike was from Km.2, who bring this to me for me to start training. Do you know Km.2? Do you know these men? Albert Casanovas and
Agustí Fernández   Many riders wish to ride for this shop. Andreu Codina, Gabino Renales, now it’s finished but at this time this place was very popular. The first Montesa I have is from Km.2, but the 2nd one I have is from the factory.
Km.2 was the largest seller of trials machines in Catalunia. Although riders didn't get paid a lot of money to wear the logo on their clothes, to wear the livery and the supplied clothing was to show that you belonged to a very special and prestigious trials club.

Why was it popular to ride for Km.2?

I don’t know…..but at this moment this was the biggest shop of trial bikes in Spain, this is why.
Between you riding cycles as a child and getting a professional contract did you ever have a normal job like most people?
No. I have the first contract with Montesa before the Beta. I had my first professional contract when I was 15 year old. This was the 2nd year when I start the moto riding.

Were your parents into motorcycles?

No.

Where did the interest in motorcycle come from?

Well, because In Olot, 3 or 4 times there has been the Spanish GP of the World Championship Trial and then there was one of my friends who made this race not professional but he make this race. At this moment in the World Championship there was just 15 riders, but then there were about 50 or 60 no?  It for this, the reason I start to make this because in Olot there was the Spanish GP. This was one of the reason, not because of my  family.
