17 Exclusive - A detailed career interview with the 1980 world trials  champion Ulf karlson

Before this manager, I would go to the trials with some Swedish friends and also with Ewa my wife. Way back in 1974 she would come to some of the trials, many of the trials to help me, especially the places with a nice weather hahaha. We also had 3 children at the time of my big year. Our daughter was born in 1976 and our son Juan was born in 1979 and Ewa would stay at home for most of the time with the children in our flat, it was a good life, it was nice for both of us.

Did you practice a great great deal?

No, at the end of the trial season I would come back to Sweden and I would practice sometimes but not everyday, no. It was very easy for me to change from riding to not riding and from not riding to riding, because I have a very good feeling.

In Spain, in 1975 you got 12th place and in Great Britain you had some problems from what I understand?

I know this, yes hahahahaha. You mean my results?

Yes, of course.

At this trial there were a lot of good local English riders and the terrain there was quite special to England, a lot of streams and mud and banks and I had some problems ther
e, yes.

But you said you like the mud and there are a lot of mud in England and at this trial?

I can't remember exactly what went wrong at this trial, but it is not such a good result, but another year, in 1974 it was a good result in England and also in Bainbridge. After that win in 1981, in Bainbridge, I remember reading that the English reporters we're writing not a lot of good things about me, but after this win in Bainbridge I had a new nickname. I was called the king of the mud. Ha ha. Even though I had won the world championship in the year 84, the press in England was not crazy about me, but after this trial in 1981 in Bainbridge, suddenly I had their interest.

At the start of the 1980 season what Montesa were you riding?

A 349.
