18 Exclusive - A detailed career interview with the 1980 world trials  champion Ulf karlson

Was your bike modified a great deal from standard?

It was quite standard, but it had some small changes, like the angle of the front fork was different and the seat was lower, but all small things. It was nearly standard.

Was the engine tuned for you?

Yes yes, this was made and tuned for me in Holland by Vim Surker. He made this engine special for me and exactly how I liked it, before the standard engine was very strong and I requested that the engine be made more smooth and this is what changes were made.

Many riders change the brands of motorcycle that they ride after a couple or three years on, some even change every year. Why did you have such loyalty and why did you stay with Montesa all of your career?

I like the red colour haha. I was quite happy with the bike, the people and I think also that bultaco are full of riders, it is difficult to explain. Montesa was the biggest importer in Sweden at the time and this of course had a great influence on me.

They tried to get me to a Kawasaki for one year and also Suzuki, this was after the good year in 1974. I was trying the bikes of Don Smith and also the Beamish Suzuki's.

I don't remember the rider that introduced me to these bikes, it was maybe Rathmell. I tried both of these bikes and I decided I go back to Montesa hahahaha. I prefer the Montesa for sure. I had of course ridden the Bultaco and I still prefer the Montesa. I think that the bultaco had a little bit better engine than the Montesa.

I would practice a lot with Vesterenen and we would try each others bikes a lot. This was around 1980 and I remember thinking that the engine of the Bultaco seemed a little better.... but only a little.
