16 Exclusive - A detailed career interview with the 1980 world trials  champion Ulf karlson

What sort of things could the factory manager help you with?

He would fix a lot of small things for me, a lot of practical things, he would arrange hotels, he would arrange the route of travel, he would arrange some foreign currency, the tickets for the plane many many many things like this and instead of me being at home arranging these things on the telephone, I could be out practicing and getting better and stronger. Before I had to do everything myself. I had to make the bike good, I had to make sure the car was good, the trailer was good, arrange everything I have said. Also I arranged for a Swedish rider to make a company with me so I always travelled with this other guy. We were the two Swedish guys this helps me at the trials because we could discuss all of the things and talk things through like the correct way through the section and 100 things all of the time. I find it difficult to communicate in English and having a riding friend from Sweden help me greatly.

He was not a particularly good rider, but not bad, also we were great companions. He goes with me to all of the trials and he travels with me, he was a good friend and I think this was also good things for me that helped me, also he was a nice and quiet guy and we knew each other well, this man's name was Hulcan Karllson. He would also ride in the same trial as me and was not so bad a rider and in the top 30 riders, maybe 35 in the world rounds.

But all of this time from 1975 to 1979 you are nearly there but you weren't at the number one spot, was this a great frustration for you?

Ha ha ha.  Nooooo I didn't think so.

I remember thinking about this, one year went into the next, then the next and the next. Of course I was thinking all of the time that I can win the World Championship. I knew I could do it. I beat all of these riders a lot, Vesterinen, Schreiber and everyone, so I know that I can win the world championship, I know I can do this.
