14 Exclusive - A detailed career interview with the 1980 world trials  champion Ulf karlson

In 1974 you were the number one rider with Montesa and now you were the number two rider?

Certainly, I feel this, but I was getting good support from the factory, maybe not quite as good as Rathmell.

How often would you visit the factory down in Spain?

I would go there maybe 3 or 4 times a year. When we went down there, we would stay in the hotel. I kno
w the company had a flat but for us we stayed in the hotel.
These 2 photo were taken for a photo shoot .

I would take my Triumph motorcycle there for some work to be completed, the mechanic who always worked on my bike was called Uttun. He was a Spanish mechanic and he worked in the competition department with the rest of the team including Pedro Pi. This time was more in the design of components and motorcycles.
This is my mechanic Vim Stucker. He was the Dutch importer and my mechanic. He drinks a lot of coffee and eat nothing. Very nice guy and he helps me a lot.

At the time, some of my first visits, a man called Jame Subira was working there. Also working there was Miquel Ciera. They were riders but they also work there in the factory. The only time I ever saw a mechanic who would work on my bike would be at the importership in Holland or Sweden or at the factory. I had no mechanical who would come with me to the trials. In the trials I was my own mechanic. Montesa did not send a mechanic to the trials at this time.

Are you a good mechanic?

At the time, I tried I tried. I could manage more things but if there was a big problem I would go to the Importer if I was in France maybe I would go to the France Importer and sometimes we will go to Jim Sandiford for help. We would make the bike good again and then we will go to the trial.
