the alfer project page 2

Picture
The Alfer had no Spark. It is fitted with a Motoplat system. This was slightly different . It had a one connection coil , an ignition module , lighting regulator and the standard stator

Picture
The stator looked homemade with the coils zip tied on !.I was starting to think this bike had been bodged badly.

Picture
I sent the coil , module and stator to Steve at Bradford ignitions , back in Spain!

I received it back 2 weeks later and in the mean time had some electro plating done on various bits and pieces

Picture
Cables were changed, new air filter and wheel bearings.
Once the electronic bits were fitted the bike started immediately , but there was a knocking . The moto villa engine needed to come apart. But where are the parts needed going to come from !

metrakit crank no 23

Picture
I hoped that the problem might be a top end one so I took the head and cylinder off.
The small end bearing was heavily worn. The piston had no signs of seizure. The big end had no movement.

Picture
My piston was worn but i'm not going to ride this bike more than once a year maximum.
I therefore ordered the small end bearing and crossed my fingers

piston details

Picture
Its an Asso no 2383.No longer listed. The piston is marked 78. My piston measured 77.78 at skirt.77.58 at crown.18mm pin.69.50 height to top edge.1.5 crown rise.30.76 from centre pin to top edge.22 from top of pin to crown edge

Picture
After fitting the top end bearing I found that the bugger had no spark. I hadnt even touched the electrical system so I was baffled about how this had happened. I checked continuity on the wires and checked the voltage coming from the stators blue wires. It read 28 volts which is good enough. The black trigger wire was providing 2.8 volts which again was fine. Then the spark was there and then went.
It ended up being the module(black box) under the tank. If you held the two terminals with a slight force pushing them together, there was a spark. If you let go, there wasn't. So a zip tiesfixed that and avoieded another £140 bill for a rebuilt black box.

Picture
I then started it after fitting the front mudguard with new decals that ive had made. The front end is looking very clean . Take a look. The tank is being painted and the decals are back to be fitted. The tank has been treated to stop the petrol bubbling up the paint and decals. Ive not done this in the past and severally regretted it.

Best of all , the bike started and the noise has reduced significantly. The noise I hear now is comon to most big air cooled engines and with a bit of piston slap. Its normal and gets less when the bike warms up as the piston expands

a bit of time and

Picture
Toda I made an Alfer seat unit and mudguard. The mudguard I had was snapped in two. I carefully plastic welded this together and then used the old mudguard as a cast. Using this cast I created an exact replica seat unit , which you can see in the photo. I has since been prepared for paint and will spot the new decals that have been made. See updates to follow
