1986 gas gas halley project - page 2

As we all know , its all in the preparation. The painting is the easy bit. Well , certainly the preparation is has to be spot on, as the paintwork wont hide the mess underneath.
I do  find painting well quite an art. Ive been painting for several years and have found that i have got better with practice and technique. I have a 50 litre compressor and a gravity gun. I dont have a spray booth , but do have a large workshop where over spray doesn't worry me.

The Halley Chassis was painted in a 2k paint which i had mixed to the exact colour of an original fork leg i had. I laid on 3 coats of high build primer and then rubbed it down with a fine paper. I then degreased it all , blew and dust off and sprayed the red basecoat.

Im  very pleased with the result.
I much prefer paint over powdercoating. The shine is much deeper and higher gloss. Also , the paint wears around the boot rubbing areas , where as the powder coating peels off and you cant find the end of the peeling off. It just keeps peeling.
Here are my results , which im pleased with.

Whilst the engine is entirely black , i plan to replace have the allen bolts in the side casing bright zinc plated. it will be a nice contrast to the black.

The top end of the engine is reassembled . The engine is then placed in the frame

The factory bikes were fitted with red silencers , but im not sure. Perhaps mine needs a few scratches.

New chassis bearings and seals. Its starting to look good

These engine allen bolts will be off the the plater soon along with the pivot linkage end bolts. The fins on the barrel will also need polishing
