Exclusive interview with josep paxau

RT: What about Jacques Coll?

P: I met him when he was already old, but he was a character. He took part in the war between Algeria and France. The first day that I met him, we met at a bar in Vacarisses where he lived. I go in and I find an old person peeking out through the window. “Is that you ?” I asked him “What are you doing?” He said that since the war, sitting with his back to the window was a no no because you could be a dead man, he was always facing the window and checking what’s happening outside. He also told me that after the war he always carried a pistol with him. He told me lots of stories, I recall his last mission, he always volunteered for all of them. In this one, twelve left and only five returned. He was injured and he hid amongst some rocks. The enemy was searching for him but because they didn’t have any dogs they could not find him and this is what saved his life.

RT: How did the 4 stoke engine come about and why did it finish?

P: The 4 stroke was completely developed in my workshop from the blueprints the designs the prototypes everything was made in Torelló. There was a demand in the market although it has a lot of disadvantages.

Currently there are three main reasons why it is not produced, its more expensive to manufacture, it needs a strenuous quality control system because even if the smallest part is faulty the engine is destroyed, the old established workshops did not know how to handle it, plus no one wants a second hand one.

Currently, people from all over Spain send them to me to fix and leave them in perfect condition.
I don’t see a future for 4 stroke, if the 2 stroke passes the anti pollution levels they will prevail because of simplicity, weight and price.
