Exclusive interview with josep paxau

RT: in 87 JP was created. Were you the provider of the engines or Villa?

P: Of course it was us that provided the engines. For the prototype and the beginning of production, Villa provided the engines but they were in crisis and they closed. Faced with these problems we decided to produce them ourselves. We had to do a lot of modifications like the clutch and cylinders to be completely dissimilar to Villa’s. It was a completely different engine but with the appearance of the old one.

RT: in 89, they presented the water-cooled version, was it the same engine but adapted?
Behind is the acclaimed GasGas Halley that secured Gabino Renales his first and only World round win in Belgium during 1987. In the foreground is the experimental white 1990 GasGas Delta 250. This is as close to a prototype as any production bike I have seen and was ridden by Bilbao and Gallach . Also the green GasGas 250 1991 Delta famously ridden by Bilbao.

P: The motorbike was presented in Torelló during a trial. The bottom end was the same but we reduced the cc and we made some changes so that we could adapt to the water-cooling system.

RT: In 92 the first hydraulic clutch was developed.
P: We cooperated with AJP although I hand made the slave cylinder that pushed the clutch. I still keep this prototype, later it went into production.

P: That bike is only because there was a grant. And everything worked, but it was interesting at the time.
