39 - A detailed career interview with 3 x World motorcycle Trials Champion Yrjö Vesterinen

We're all the same and all love our bikes. Yrjo is no exception.

At 61, you're still a spring chicken, so what else have you got planned?

I'm just hoping to stay healthy. I've got no big ambitions as such.

Now that you have departed from Apico, are you planning on starting any more business empires?

No, definitely not, no.  At times I found that running the business was quite stressful and not that rewarding financially. At times it was ok but the grief you get sometimes, it's not worth it. If you could earn a decent living being a gardener or something that must be a much more fulfilling life being able to be outside.

What else can I ask you that I have missed? I feel as though I have milked you like a cow?

No, this has been interesting for me as well. It's been good to go through these old memories and pull the information out.

You have a particularly good memory for accounting details, there are some people who just can't recount much at all?

I think a lot of the memories relate to the bikes I was riding. I've had to look at some details to work out exactly what bike I've been riding at any time.
There is one thing that I'm hoping to do. I'm hoping to find another work bike from somewhere. Maybe a Bultaco but something that hasn't been seen for some time, something that has been stuck in a barn or a garage and a project that I could bring back to life.

Thank you Vesty
As was mentioned at the start of this interview, since this interview was completed, Yrjo has arranged his private collection in a special building. You will remember that it was not that easy to get a good look at all of his collection in these interview photos. So if you follow this link it will take you to the beautiful collection containing some very special bikes.
