10 Exclusive - A detailed career interview with the 1980 world trials  champion Ulf karlson

Did you find throughout all of your career that the financial and money side for you was always a struggle, or was it only in the early years?

No it was only the first years when I was a boy.

Did you always ride the Swedish national events as well?

Yes, always always all of the time.

So back in 71 and 72 what was your priority?

My priority was to win the Swedish championship because it cost less money to get to the trials. Later when I get more money I can travel to more European trials?

When I see your 4th place in the 1971 Swedish trial, I think to myself, this great result would have motivated you to ride more and more of the European Championship rounds. But this did not happen. Was it just the money reason that you've told us?

I think this trial that I had 4th place in was late in the summer, so I don't think there were many trials left in the season.

You were a painter back here, were you self-employed?
You can stop working for one moment  Ulf :)

I work for one company and they were very good to me and let me have as much holiday as I need back then. I work for half of the year and the other half of the year I was just concentrating on the trials and making competitions.

In 1973 you only ride the one World trial why was that?

Yes hahaha, this was because they take my licence. I made some trouble in the hotel room hahahahahahaha but no fighting hahaha this was when we were young and we take a fire extinguisher and we pull out the release at the top and we squirted around here and there and everywhere. After this, the Swedish motorcycle authority take my licence from me in the spring and so for the rest of the year I could not compete.
